We are already in the third week of term and the Holy month of Ramadan is approaching. With that in mind, we will be holding a special Ramadan assembly on Wednesday morning, at 7.30am, to teach our international students about this special month and the traditions that are practiced. Parents are welcome to join the assembly.
The cross campus Friends of Compass parent groups are joining forces to organise an Iftar Buffet, during Ramadan. It is a time to meet parents and friends and enjoy a meal together after sunset. Tickets are on sale this week. If you would like to sponsor a member of our support staff by buying a ticket for them, that would be most welcome. A separate notice with more information has been sent.
Due to the onset of Ramadan, this is the last week of ECAs this term. From Sunday 5th May, we will observe Ramadan hours in school and there will be no ECAs. Please collect your child promptly at 1.00pm.
Last week our Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Texas A&M University to learn about STEAM projects and how they are developed by their maths and ICT specialists. Here are some student reviews of the visit.
‘We went on a STEAM trip to Texas University. There, I learned how to make a video in coding using blocks which is part of engineering. Later, there was a game which was all about pre-algebra. This was part of mathematics. After, I learned Arabic sign language by playing a board game. This is part of art and engineering. Over the day, I learned how different activities were part of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.’
Zaira Munoz Diaz, Y6a
‘On 24th April 2019, we went to Texas University for a STEAM trip. On this trip, I learned a bit of Arabic sign language such as numbers, days of the week, mother, father, brother and sister. It was presented as a board game and I won. I also saw a man who was doing a survey on how many people speak English or Arabic at home, school/work and in public. This was maths because he was using statistics. It was a great day out.’
Rachel Marshall, Y6a
Year 4 led a class assembly based on their IPC learning from the unit, Land, Sea and Sky. Here is their class report on the assembly.
‘We managed to link our learning with our personal goal of the week ‘Thoughtfulness’. Our assembly was educational and promoted environmental awareness. We spoke about the rainforests and the effects of deforestation, followed by a performance of the ‘Rang-tan’ poem to highlight the dangers deforestation present to orangutans. Next we looked at the need to conserve water, and spoke about how drought effects different areas of the world. We finished by taking people on a magical journey through the continent of Africa, using dance to convey our learning. Thank you to all the parents who came, we hope everyone enjoyed our assembly!
Book Week takes place next week, starting on the 7th May. Our theme is “Every story takes you on a journey” and separate details of the week’s events will be sent to you.
Friends of Compass and our Student Voice group have come up with an exciting plan for a new playground at Rayyan. After much thought and planning, we have all the elements and would welcome parent assistance to create a professional drawing of the area. The work will be completed over the summer holiday and we are looking forward to having an interactive play space.
Have a lovely week.
