Iftar Friends of Compass School May 2019

Madinat Khalifa Primary Headlines | Monday, 20 May 2019

Dear Parents,

"Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going."-  Rita Mae Brown

The importance of ‘home’ languages

Here at Compass International School Doha we recognise the importance of celebrating the culture and language of all members of the community. Recently we’ve had two developments that exemplify the school’s ethos and values.

Language of the Month

With over 72 nationalities within the Compass community, there are many ‘home’ or first languages spoken other than English. Miss Comerford, our EAL teacher, is focusing one of these languages each month. The most recent one has been Portuguese and this has been recognised in a number of ways – we have a language of the month board which includes key Portuguese phrases, it also has a series of QR codes that lead to student-led videos introducing the language and countries in which it is spoken. Our Portuguese-speaking students have also been touring primary classrooms teaching the classes the language. Rather than “Good Morning” many of the students have greeted me with "Bom Dia”. We look forward to learning about our next language of the month soon.

IPC Personal Goals

As you will be well aware of a key aspect of the International Primary Curriculum is the personal goals. These are ingrained in the heart of everything we do here at Compass, from the criteria for House Points, our student-chosen ‘Star of the Week’ and even in the language used to recognise student achievement in academic areas of learning. These personal goals have also been embraced by our Arabic teachers and to support this we have created posters for each of Personal Goals in the Arabic language. These are displayed not only in the Arabic classrooms but in all Primary classrooms.

And finally…

A huge thank you to our Friends of Compass School (FCS) for Thursday’s wonderful Iftar event. It was a truly remarkable opportunity for families, students and teachers to come together as a community and celebrate the month of Ramadan and learn more about the customs and culture of Qatar, and the Islamic faith.

This is just one of many events and initiatives our FCS has led this year, we have also had the Sports Day event at Al Bidda Park, supporting students the BISQ games, Ramadan treat bags, roses for teachers to name but a few. If you are interested in being part of future events please contact our FCS by email: fcs.mk@nais.qa

Have a great week.
