Year 2, Early Reading Experiences Lead

I am originally from Glasgow in Scotland. I graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2001 with a BA degree in International Business. I then decided to follow my passion and returned to the university to complete a PGCE in Primary Education in 2004. I have taught across all of the primary school phase, from Reception to Year 6. This has allowed me to have a holistic understanding of child development.

I plan activities which are purposeful, engaging and allow children to make connections in their learning through exploration and collaboration. By listening  to children and their ideas, they have the opportunity to lead their own learning and follow their interests. This ensures that children become life long and independent learners.

I have taken on additional roles during my career. I led and developed a literacy programme across the primary phase to ensure consistency and to improve teaching and learning in both writing and reading. I was involved in developing ‘Right-Respecting School’ status too.  This was a wonderful opportunity for children to make links with the wider community where they were able to understand, more clearly, their place in the world.

I have taught at NAS Dubai for three years in Reception and Year 2. I am now the lead teacher for reading. I work closely with the Head of English in creating an ethos where all our children are readers; both for enjoyment and to further their learning. I am also working in collaboration with colleagues to ensure we are consistently meeting needs of the children we teach by focusing on reading for a variety of purposes across all curriculum areas.

My husband and I have been settled in Dubai since January 2012. We arrived as a family of three and have grown to five. My three children keep me entertained and busy, there is never a dull moment! We are all enjoying taking advantage of all Dubai has to offer and this is where we call home.
