I was very fortunate to be placed in beautiful Perthshire for my first teaching year and remained there until my family and I came to Dubai. I have taught across most of the primary school phase, allowing me to work with children of all ages. I realised very quickly that I do not have a favourite year group as each year group brings its own rewards and challenges which I love.
I have a passion for literacy with activities that are purposeful, engaging and lots of fun. I aim to create a class room where children feel that they have ownership and a sense of belonging. I believe children learn most successfully when they are actively involved in all aspects of what they are doing. By listening to children and their ideas they have the opportunity to lead their own learning and follow their interests. I encourage children to be problem solvers, to inquire, to debate and think critically.
I have taken on additional roles during my career. I led and developed a literacy programme across the primary phase to ensure consistency and to improve teaching and learning. I was involved in developing Right Respecting School’s status. This was a fantastic opportunity to make links with the wider community where children were able to understand a little more clearly their place in the world. They are enabled to make decisions, to become confident individuals and responsible citizens.
Working alongside colleagues where we can share ideas and collaborate to develop and broaden children’s experiences is also very important to me. A strong team offers support and challenge my thinking, something I adore!
My family and I have been settled in Dubai since January 2012. We arrived as a family of three and have grown to five. My three children keep me entertained and busy, there is never a dull moment! We are all enjoying taking advantage of all Dubai has to offer and this is where we call home.
