Theory of Standards

  • Theory of Standards

Standards provide a foundation for the teachers to develop clear learning targets. Every high performing school aligns its curriculum and instruction to some set of standards.

Windermere Preparatory School has aligned its curriculum to the Educational Records Bureau's CTP4 Standards, the College Board Advanced Placement Standards, and the International Baccalaureate Program Standards.

The CTP4 was intentionally selected as a foundation for the school’s curriculum because of its emphasis on critical thinking and complex problem solving skills. Similarly, the International Baccalaureate Program was selected as the capstone program in the school because of its emphasis on higher order thinking and application.

The CTP4 spring tests and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme exams provide important third party feedback regarding the performance of individual students against the prescribed, specific standards. Additionally, these measures give the school important feedback that can be used to evaluate the alignment of the curriculum and the effectiveness of instruction on a year-to-year basis.

In order to achieve and maintain a guaranteed and viable curriculum, Power Standards have been developed for each course and grade level at Windermere Preparatory School.

Power Standards and their associated benchmarks articulate the learning goals of the class and provide the faculty with a basis for developing instructional units, assessments of student learning, as well as the selection of resources and texts for their classes.

Additionally, Power Standards clearly articulate for students and parents the intended learning outcomes for each course.

  • Windermere Preparatory School Curriculum is not aligned to the Common Core Standards.
  • Because textbooks are now pervasively marketed by publishers with a “Common Core” label, some of these textbooks are used by Windermere Preparatory School teachers. In such cases, materials will have been vetted for alignment with our curriculum.
  • Textbooks are one of a number of instructional resources utilized in classrooms each day. A single textbook is not representative of the total curriculum in any course or grade level.
  • The Educational Records Bureau (CTP4) testing program aligns with the PSAT and SAT, high stakes examinations that students take as part of the college admission process.
