Outdoor Education at ISM Rosinka 2021 – Kayaking

Outdoor Education at ISM Rosinka

Outdoor Education has started with a bang this academic year at ISM Rosinka. From PE lessons to After School Activities (ASAs).

Students have been given the opportunity to take part in Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Mountain Biking. Year Six even takes part in our Outdoor club, where students are learning the skills for a self-supported expedition.

In our PE lessons this term, students from Years Four to Six have been taken to new heights, conquering fears and learning the skills to become independent climbers. With a record-breaking fifty climbing sessions in term one, we were very proud and excited to see the progress the students have made, both individually and in their climbing groups.

In addition to PE lessons, our Outdoor Education program has continued as part of a very successful first term of ASA's. Students have braved the elements in Kayaking and Paddle Boarding on the Rosinka lake, improving their paddlesport skills as they traversed the water. For some students, this meant taking part in paddlesport for the first time and overcoming fears of water itself. We were struck by the maturity that students of all ages displayed in tackling these personal obstacles.

Back on dry land, students have been climbing and Mountain biking, developing their skills in both. Climbing groups have been looking at climbing techniques and knot tying, as well as belaying to become more independent climbers. Our cyclists have been progressing their bike handling and road safety skills as they journey the varied terrain of Rosinka.

In Year Six, students have been given the opportunity to participate in Outdoor Education Club, learning the skills to take part in a self-supported expedition in term three. Although only starting recently, I have been delighted to see over half of all Year Six students chose to participate and hope more will join as the year goes on. Students have been learning to map read and use their camping skills ahead of putting these to the test this week with some basic navigation and tent work around Rosinka.

In all the outdoor activities, I have been extremely impressed by our students' progress in such a short time and cannot wait to see how the students take on the challenge of term two ASAs.
