Additional Support

As an international school, we have many students who have little or no knowledge of the English language when they first join us. Therefore, we ensure that we provide significant support for these students.

In our Primary School, there are specific English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers who work with every year group and support pupils both in-class and out-of-class in one-to-one or small group sessions to build their English language skills. 

Students in our Secondary School also benefit from ability-grouping in English lessons to ensure that those with limited English obtain appropriately targeted instruction. Those at early levels of English development are also withdrawn from other language lessons and History (a language-intense subject) for further lessons. All teachers complete training in how to work with language learners in mainstream classes as we believe that language is best learnt from each other. This also ensures that all lessons are differentiated for students of differing English language ability.

The parents of students with particular special needs are encouraged to discuss this with our team prior to entry to the school as this way we can tailor our approach to suit your child's individual needs.

Education For All

The International School of Moscow is committed to providing an appropriate and high-quality education for all of our students. We believe that all young people, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, have an entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum, which is accessible to them. All children, where possible, should be fully included in all aspects of school life.

It is essential that each individual child feels welcome and valued. Therefore, inclusion is always evident in the general ethos of our school. Everyone involved in our school’s life aims to have and encourage:  

  • high expectations for all
  • a feeling of self-worth and self-confidence
  • positive, equal images
  • role models from all groups in society

We regularly observe, assess and record the progress of all our students in order to identify learners who are not making satisfactory progress and who may have additional needs.

All children new to our school are assessed to establish their current level of need. If needs are highlighted, then the SENDCO (Student Support Services) teacher will,
with the support of the respective teachers, devise a programme to suit each individual. Based upon observations, assessment data and following a discussion with parents / carers the student may be recorded as needing either:  

  • differentiated support within the class
  • additional support through SEND support 
  • withdrawn support from lessons
