Rosinka Forest School

Forest School is an inspirational process that enables children to explore and experience the natural world through hands-on activities outdoors. Developed in Denmark, Forest School sessions help young learners achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem and encourage an appreciation of the natural world.

Forest School sessions are designed to enhance the curriculum with many key benefits:

  • Develops fine and gross motor control
  • Promotes risk taking
  • Provides leadership opportunities
  • Creates a connection with the nature
  • Develops teamwork skills
  • Offers opportunities to use such tools as hammer and nails/sawing, build fire and den under professional guidance
  • 1:1 ratio using tools

The Forest School movement has a philosophy of child-led learning, with a focus on all the senses. The aim of Forest School is to foster rich learning experiences, ecological literacy, and healthy living by connecting children to nature and by taking learning outdoors. Forest School is often defined as:

An inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve, and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment.

The Forest School Curriculum is child-directed and play-based and allows children and learners the time and space to develop their interests, skills, and understanding through practical, hands-on experiences.

At The International School of Moscow, our Forest School allows children to have the freedom to explore, play, build, create, imagine, and use their senses to experience the outdoor environment and engage with one another. The sessions are carefully planned, led by trained forest school practitioners and take place outside the classroom in all weathers in our local onsite forest.  In the sessions, children can sing around the fire, learn to use and make tools, build dens, dig in the mud, identify bugs with magnifying glasses or retreat to the hammocks for relaxation and time to develop bonds with their peers.
