Sixth Form

Entering the Sixth Form at ISM will mark an important educational milestone. Sixth Form comprises the final two years of school (Years 12 and 13) where students work towards obtaining AS and A Level qualifications.

Students gain A level qualifications that prepare them for university education. Introduced in 1951, A levels are the official qualification in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, accredited by CIE, Edexcel and AQA.

Entering the Sixth Form at ISM will mark an important educational milestone. Throughout the Sixth Form, students work towards either AS or A Levels (Advanced General Certificate of Education). These official examinations prove that a student has successfully completed this stage of compulsory secondary education and will, grades permitting, allow direct access to university.

ISM Sixth Form 2020

The Sixth Form at ISM is very much geared towards preparing students for university. A Levels require a great deal of focus and application. The demands of the courses are a big step up from those at GCSE and IGCSE and students will be expected to work very hard outside of lesson times in order to supplement the work covered by their teachers. We offer over twenty A Level subjects in our school, the details of which can be found in our Sixth Form Prospectus.

As is the case at every stage of a student’s education at The International School of Moscow, the study of academic subjects is only one part of the educational experience. Sixth Form students are encouraged to build on their academic knowledge by pursuing experiences in their fields of interest. As the most senior students of our school, they are also expected to assume a greater role in the leadership of the student body; leading sports teams, social clubs and community initiatives.

It is our ambition that by the time students complete their education with us that they are not only well-prepared for university, but are also well-equipped with the skills, confidence and character to succeed in life.

University Preparation

As part of the curriculum we have a specially-tailored University Preparation Course. The course starts by focusing on the independent study skills needed for A Level and university courses. This includes looking at the reliability of sources, referencing, note-taking and time management. By Easter in Year 12, students will be starting to put together the paperwork they need for their university applications. This will be finished and submitted during Term One of Year 13.

Alongside this course, we also run sessions on:

  • Mental health in school and at university.
  • Living on your own – Cooking, hygiene, living with other people.
  • Managing and budgeting money.
  • Staying safe – personal safety, substance awareness.

Upon completion of Sixth Form at ISM, our students have received offers from some of the world’s top universities including: Cambridge, Imperial College, University College London, University of Toronto, New York University, Michigan State University, Amsterdam University and Delft.

Our students study a range of courses from medicine to fashion design and from business to nano-biology.
