Year 5 Scientists visit BIS HCMC Secondary Campus

19 January 2018

This week all seven Year 5 classes had the opportunity to visit the Secondary Campus to participate in investigations. These were designed to develop the children’s understanding of scientific language and how an investigation is structured.

  • Y5 Science Visit  (1)-min
  • Y5 Science Visit  (2)-min
  • Y5 Science Visit  (3)-min
  • Y5 Science Visit  (5)-min
  • Y5 Science Visit  (4)-min

This week, whilst our Secondary students were away on their residential trips, our Primary students paid a visit to the Secondary Campus. Our Year 5 students enjoyed a day at the Science labs and our Year 3 children had fun in the Design and Technology makerspace, creating chocolate moulds!

The Year 5 children worked together in small groups prior to the visit, to find out more about the particular area they would be focusing on, they then completed the investigation and will reflect on this once back in class. Areas of focus were:

  • reflection and refraction,
  • looking at pH,
  • making a force meter and;
  • using microscopes.

In addition, the day helps to develop the transition from Primary to Secondary, giving the children an introduction to the science labs and meeting Secondary teachers.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and developed their scientific skills. We would like to thank the Secondary Science Department for all their help in making this such a rewarding and exciting activity.
