Healthy alternatives and sustainability at the International Day Global Café 2018

At this year’s International Day the students from the Community Committee were joined by aspiring members in Year 12 to sell healthier drinks and shaved ice.

The students sold the products to their thirsty friends and teachers during the lunchtime period and raised a fantastic 6,793,000 VND. Students encouraged their friends to bring a bottle for their drinks and charged extra for biodegradable paper cups in an effort to promote sustainable living.

One student commented ‘I loved being involved in this, it was so fun planning and I got a real buzz from selling the drinks. I also felt great knowing that we weren’t creating loads of plastic waste as well as supporting our community partners’. Reem Mehanna, our new Community Service Project Manager, said ‘As a new comer, supporting the students while they were working at the Global Café was one of my best experiences so far at the school. Seeing them plan, come up with ideas, budget and execute was a great example of the school spirit and students’ entrepreneurship. It was a true reflection of students’ commitment to supporting community partners.”

Part of the process involved students designing the drinks concept and pitching for a loan from the PTG to fund their initial costs. PTG member Melanie Rowe reflected on the success of the experience, ‘I am amazed to see how well received and successful a new idea can be on the first attempt.’

The money raised will be used to fund a curriculum linked community project where Year 8 students will visit some of our partners and create persuasive campaigns – look out for more details to come!
