Community Service Hummingbird Award Winners

The aim of our community service programme here at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City is to move away from purely fundraising and charity and put a larger emphasis on students volunteering their time and energy.

We want to open doors and create opportunities for students from a young age to overcome language, social, and ability barriers, while taking responsibility towards people and the environment, both on a local and global scale. This all goes towards developing positive characteristics of global citizens.

Celebrating student success is something we pride ourselves on here at BIS Vietnam. One way we celebrate success in community service across the primary school is via the Hummingbird Award. The Hummingbird Award is presented each term to students who show excellence in community service. This could be through a variety of avenues; their work in the year group projects, in one of the community service based co-curricular activities that connect children with one of our community partners, or in our whole school community events. Each term, the teachers and club leaders are asked to nominate students who’ve excelled in these areas to be recognised for their effort, interest or progress.

Hummingbird Award Winners - Term 1

Our congratulations go to Bento in Year 1 and Quoc Huy in Year 6 who’ve been awarded the Hummingbird Medal for Term 1.

Bento 2

The Year 1 Community project is a partnership with Thien Phuoc Home for disabled children. Every week, a few children from Thien Phuoc come to BIS to play with the Year 1 students in the Fundinotots room. This is a fun experience for the Thien Phuoc children, as they enjoy the toys and play equipment available at the school. It is also a great experience for both BIS and Thien Phuoc children to be aware and accepting of people who are different from themselves, and to build friendships with new people.

“Bento had a warm and caring nature towards the children from Thien Phuoc. Bento tried his best to discover what the children enjoyed doing and found ways to join in with those activities. He made a great impression on the children, and he now has a friend from Thien Phuoc who looks forward to seeing him each visit.  Way to go, Bento!” - Samantha Baker, Community Service Leader

Quoc Huy 2

Quoc Huy took part in the community football club with our partners Binh An School. This  has been a popular club for several years at the primary school due to the fun games and coaching by Mr Pete as well as the team building opportunities. The boys from Binh An come to BIS to join the team and play cooperatively with the BIS students in the club.

“Quoc Huy communicated well with the partners from Binh An. He was noted as an excellent role model for the other students from both Binh An and BIS. Quoc Huy was a kind, sensible, and mature member of the Community Football team. Excellent work, Quoc Huy!” - Samantha Baker, Community Service Leader

On Monday 18th February the community football club will be participating as a team in the annual community football tournament. Held on the BIS Junior Campus field, this is an enjoyable community event so please join us to cheer on the teams!

We would also like to applaud all the students from the primary school who were recognised by their teachers and club leaders for excellence in Community Service in Term 1:

Mian Mian, Ayaka, Aariana, Vivi, Minh Ngan, Anna, SeaUn, Jolisse, Kha, Crystal, Mariia, Paulina, Khanh Anh, Kevin, Emma, Kathy, Toan, Tam.
