This Monday, our team, the Thao Dien Disabled School club, ran a form time activity for the Year 9s to follow up on their Wellbeing lesson on the topic of “Accepting and Learning from others”.

Thao Dien Disabled School club is a CCA that gives students an opportunity to go to the Thao Dien Disabled School where children with disabilities study, to have an opportunity to interact and have fun with the children in the school during the session. During each of our previous visits to the school, all of the children always show great excitement with warm hugs and smiles to each and every one of us. Unfortunately, due to the current situation of Covid-19 pandemic, we are not able to visit the children. Therefore, we came up with the idea of spreading awareness around our BIS community through teaching the Year 9s about this community.

During the process of preparing this activity, our team thought thoroughly about what we could do to best help the students to understand the meaning behind this topic in this short amount of time given. As a result, we prepared two activities which were the lip-reading and one-hand clothes folding activity. These were for the students to learn and have a similar experience as a person with hearing impairment and upper limb disability. The Year 9s engaged well with these activities and learned how the students in the Thao Dien Disabled school overcome their disabilities. Our purpose was also to get rid of false stereotypes about people with disabilities and to raise awareness of the importance of respecting others, encouraging our students to develop character strengths like kindness and social intelligence.

On behalf of the Thao Dien Disabled School team, we would like to say that it was a rewarding experience for us to see how committed the students are throughout the activity and to hear positive feedback from them which is evident that this session has contributed to a better well being for the Year 9s. We have also gained more knowledge about disabilities ourselves and would like to inform a wider community about this global significance, the students are also encouraged to spread the positive message around along with their new learnings. We hope that through our small inputs, we have implemented our responsibility as a global citizen.
