Staff Profile: Shirley Smith

Shirley Smith_Music-Drama Teacher

Drama & Music Teacher / Head of Instrumental

BA (Hons) Music and English, Lancaster University

PGCE, Music and English

The music department at Lancaster University was, at the time, small but perfectly formed. Staff included the British composer and artist Edward Cowie and Richard Langham Smith, a foremost authority on Debussy.  Musical luminaries such as the Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski and English born Sir Michael Tippett also contributed to the eclectic atmosphere, and a number of graduates from that era went on to pursue illustrious careers all over the world.  After this brush with academia, Shirley’s career took an altogether different route, beginning in Community Arts.  This set the tone for a variety of musical activities and experiences from performing Mozart to playing bubble music with three year olds, always with the aim of introducing all ages and abilities to the joy of discovering, understanding and participating in musical activities of all levels and genres.  The last ten years have seen her horizons expanded by sailing to the Mediterranean, building houses in Bulgaria, teaching in Bangkok, travelling through South America, and more recently crossing the Atlantic to and from the Caribbean.  Her tastes in music range from Classical through Rock and Roll, Big Band, contemporary Folk, and all points beyond. Off duty, she loves to travel, read, and keep fit.
