Doppler Racing - F1 in Schools 2016

Last year, BIS HCMC boasted the first ever team to represent Vietnam at the internationally acclaimed F1 in Schools World Finals. In 2016, Doppler Racing, against all of the odds, built on the legacy of their predecessors and exceeded even their own expectations.

In October, whilst many of us enjoyed a fantastic International Day celebration, Doppler Racing embarked on the gruelling 30 hour expedition to Austin, Texas. However, that is not where this journey began.

Thirteen months before they boarded the plane, shortly after Team Helios returned victorious from last years competition, Steve, Rui, Ben and Hae On came together to establish the new F1 in Schools team; Doppler Racing. By November 2015 they had built their first two prototypes, and in December they were able to raise awareness of their mission to make it to America at the Christmas BISzaar. However, their first big opportunity didn’t arrive until the following February, when Xin Chao magazine interviewed the team at the school.

The press coverage helped Doppler Racing to increase their reach, and the sponsorship offers began to materialise, including a superb amount of support from Audi Vietnam. The car manufacturers even invited the team to show off their pit display and car alongside new Audi designs at their ‘progressive event’ in Hanoi.

Of course, being ambitious, and setting your sights on a future goal is only part of the battle. As well as the highs of success, there will also be challenges along the way, some of which will be great enough to make you question your capabilities. Doppler Racing faced many challenges on their journey to the World Finals. They had to persevere in the face of rejection, doubt and fear, but persevere they did.

Despite all of the barriers that were put in their way, Doppler Racing not only made it to the World Finals but they made a real impression on their peers. Creative thinking helped them to get to the competition and to win the admiration of their rivals.

“The other teams complimented us on our unique take on the pit display and how not only aesthetically appealing but also cheap it was! We think they really admired our teamwork and how close we were as a team.” Rui, Doppler Racing.

Admiration, is not all that this team of BIS HCMC students won. Ben, finished in the top 20 on the ‘Reaction Time Scoreboard’, and the team finished second in the Autodesk Fusion Pressure Challenge. A two hour team design challenge, where all 39 National Champions were asked to design the F1 car of the future. As a result they received a trophy, two 3D SpaceMouse Pros, and a brand new 3D Printer for the school.

F1 in Schools offers a way to learn Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) related subjects in an exciting way. The competition is achieving great results and is going some way to increasing the intake of students into Engineering careers.

There are many success stories of students that have gone through the initiative and have gone on to achieve significant outcomes in their lives including positions in Formula One teams. For one member of Team Doppler, Steve Ko, that journey could have already started.

Steve was selected as one of nine students who will be admitted to the Randstad Williams Engineering Academy this August. He will be mentored by the programme whilst he completes his Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering degree at KAIST in South Korea.

We’d like to say a huge congratulations to Team Doppler for their perseverance and ambition throughout the competition!
