School Developments 2018/19

Continual investment in our whole school facilities demonstrates our commitment to providing your child with the best possible learning experience. Find out more about the recent developments at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City (BIS HCMC).

Classroom refurbishments with a focus on learning technology

Our pilot classrooms in Year 3 and at the Secondary Campus last year, enabled us to gather evidence of what worked well and what could be further improved in our classrooms. Following our comprehensive research, we have opened 14 brand new Year 3 and Year 4 classrooms at the Junior Campus, and 24 classrooms in the Secondary Campus for the start of the 2018/19 academic year.

The enhanced size of select classrooms, flexibility in use and technology rich learning environments will further improve the ways in which your child will learn.

Junior Campus Classrooms | BIS HCMC

New ‘Enquiry Pods’ in the Junior Campus have been designed around our Aide Memoire, enabling collaborative and innovative learning experiences across all classes. The development of the ‘Enrich Rooms’ will also allow further learning opportunities for small group intervention to support a varied range of learning needs across the curriculum. The flexibility of space will help to further personalise learning experiences through support, core and extensive activities.

Today’s learners are very different from those that a traditional educational system was designed for. To reflect advancements in learning technologies our classrooms have been remodelled to fit the evolving needs of the modern student.

BIS is leading the way in how true integration can enhance learning across all academic areas.

Technology allows teachers and students to remove the physical barriers of the classroom, offering students a way to connect our curriculum with the real world. To thrive in the 21st century workplace, students need to have more than a working knowledge of technological tools. By integrating the best of these learning technologies into the regular curriculum we are ensuring that our students are well equipped for their future.

Investing in both hardware and infrastructure is vitally important to ensure that our school stays ahead of the technological curve. With additional bandwidth, a newly updated Wi-Fi system and more efficiency in how our network is organised, upgraded and maintained, BIS is leading the way in how true integration can enhance learning across all academic areas.

New, innovative library spaces

The promotion of reading is extremely important across all areas of the BIS curriculum with higher order reading comprehension and information literacy skills essential for our students’ preparation for life in this age of information.

Therefore, we have created 2 new innovative library spaces at our Junior and Secondary Campuses. The Junior Campus library sits on the ground floor of the campus building so that you and your children can access this exciting new provision as you enter through Gate A.  The emphasis for the design brief was functionality and we are confident that our new library space will encourage our children to further appreciate and connect with the written word and information literacy.

At the Secondary Campus we have commissioned a contemporary library design that will create a space specifically designed to promote independent, group and personalised engagement with information and media. The library is sited at the heart of the campus representing its role in supporting student learning across the curriculum.

Investment in STEAM facilities

Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) play an invaluable part in helping your child to develop academic, social and personal success.

To promote our collaboration with MIT and to complement our makerspace at the Secondary Campus, we have developed two new DREAMS Labs located at each of our primary campuses. These labs are specifically designed to provide an area where your child’s imagination can be ignited through the various elements of STEAM. From 3D printing to robotics, students as young as 5 will be developing a set of skills such as problem solving and logic and reasoning, bringing technology to the forefront of your child’s learning process.

To further promote the performing arts alongside our unique collaboration with The Juilliard School, we have created a newly updated dance and drama studio at the Junior Campus. With the flexibility to be a black box theatre, fully functional dance studio and green screening area, this room will truly be a multi-purpose and multi-functional Juilliard creative space.

Our Secondary Campus has seen an expansion of the already extensive suite of specialist STEAM facilities with an additional science laboratory. This new chemistry lab is equipped with the latest specialist equipment, including presentational and datalogging technologies. This will offer our students of the sciences further opportunities to explore and investigate the world around them through both traditional and contemporary scientific methods in a high quality environment.

Developing our outdoor spaces

Listening and creating actionable results from parental feedback is very important to us at BIS HCMC. We have therefore installed a brand new seating area that is fully covered from both the sun and rain along the side of our whole school field.

At our Early Years and Infant Campus that opened in January 2018, we have also continued our plans to develop our outside space. Physical development is one of the 3 prime areas for children in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The new ‘Agility 5 Trim Trail’ will allow children in F3 and above to grip, balance and move; key elements of physical development. We have also increased the shading in the outdoor play areas to protect the children all year round.

Refurbishment and extension of the Sixth Form Centre

The Sixth Form Centre is the hub of student life and learning for our Secondary IB Diploma students. The refurbished and extended Sixth Form Centre provides our students with direct access to our University Guidance Team, Sixth Form Welfare and Guidance Staff and the IB core leads. The environment is both contemporary and conducive to sixth form community building and identity that has now become the base for continued outstanding performance at IB.

Brand new Secondary cafeteria

The cafeteria is one of the most important parts of school life and as we have developed our inspiring places to read and learn it is important that we provide inspiring places to eat, socialise and network too, this will be a part of our students’ future lives beyond school after all.

Secondary Cafeteria | BIS HCMC

Recent studies from global organizations like the World Green Building Council show that smart cafeteria design can enhance creativity, and shape more focused thinking as well as improve morale.

We have included plenty of modern ideas to transform our current cafeteria space into a dynamic setting that engages students, boosts their sense of wellness and their readiness to engage in their learning.

Disability access at the Secondary Campus

As an inclusive school we have improved the access to our Secondary Campus this year with the installation of a disability access ramp to the front of the main building. This will enable access to key parts of the school for parent and community events.
