Learning Support and EAL

Ruth started her career as a primary teacher in west London, before venturing overseas. Since then she has had the opportunity to teach in British and American International Schools in the Emirates, Cameroon and Indonesia. Her most recent post was in the Learning Support Team at the British International School in Jakarta, where she worked for four years. She also spent a number of years with the British Council, coordinating the Young Learner programme at their teaching centre in Tunis.

As well as over twenty years' experience, I also have a Master's degree in Teaching English to Young Learners from the University of York; and further postgraduate qualifications in inclusive education and Special Needs from Queen's University, Belfast, along with my B.Education (Primary).

We relocated to DC from Jakarta last summer due to my husband's work. I am delighted to be teaching here at BISW; working alongside my colleagues in the Learning Support team to support children with additional learning needs as well as teaching English as an Additional Language. An International School is a very special place to teach and learn, and BISW is a particularly welcoming, friendly and supportive school.

As a parent of two teenage boys, there is little 'free time' to talk of, although I do enjoy playing tennis, reading and baking. I am also looking forward to taking advantage of the opportunities to see some world class theatre, dance and opera while we are here in DC.
