Learning Languages

Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong is a truly international school, offering rich and varied provision for language-learning for students of all ages, at all levels of experience. We want our language-learning community to be both vibrant and welcoming, and we value good conversation in as many languages as possible.

The NAIS Pudong Language Strategy:

English is studied by all students at school, developing skills in language, literacy and literature.

EAL is provided for students who need extra support with English as a second or foreign language.

Mandarin runs from Pre-Nursery to Year 13, and is available for beginners, experienced students, and native speakers.  Older students can take IGCSE courses in Mandarin and then study it for their IB Diploma.

Spanish and French are offered in Year 5 so that our students may choose another major global language to add to their English and Mandarin skills.

French, German and Spanish are all currently offered from Year 6 onwards, alongside continued Mandarin provision, to give students and their families an opportunity to choose which European language they’d like to pursue as they get older.

Korean is offered as an IGCSE course and IB Diploma programme to native Korean students.

French and Dutch are  available for native-speakers, and we have dedicated Language Schools which run classes in our school building after our main school day has finished.

Italian is also on offer as an after-school option for native Italian students from Year 2 up to Year 11.

In addition to our taught languages, a handful of our oldest students study their native language in a ‘self-taught’ capacity for their IB Diploma Language A. We actively support them in doing so.

Every family has a different language-learning background, and individual circumstances which require our attention. We develop links within the Shanghai community wherever possible, so that we can aim to broker private arrangements to meet your child’s particular language needs. Please do contact Ms Sabrina Malcolm-Severn, Head of Languages, at if you would like more information.
