June 5th to 9th was Whole School Green Week themed ‘Grow it, don’t throw it!’ giving students the opportunity to reflect upon their impact on our environment and the positive changes they could make. Students made Green pledges and promises that would help reduce their impact on earth.

Secondary students made ‘Waste Reduction Campaign’ competition entries in the form of video clips and infographics. Winning entries won a ‘Bag for Life’ made by Primary and the opportunity to help plant our new fruit tree garden.

Secondary Science teachers visited the Early Years Centre with their classes to help students make bug hotels and bird feeders out of recycled materials to help attract more wildlife to their garden area and teach them about habitats and ecology.

Secondary Science teachers and their classes also hosted all Primary classes for a fun workshop testing different soil samples to learn about detecting soil contamination and the effects it has. The workshops were a great opportunity for Secondary students to take a leadership role and test their own practical skills and knowledge whilst forming friendships with younger students in the school.

British International School Hanoi - Green Week

To conclude the week the whole school had a meat-free day in the canteen to reduce our carbon emissions and negative impact on the environment. At the end of the day we all took part in an ‘Earth Hour’ where we tried to use less electricity during our lessons throughout the school for one hour. Students also came into school wearing green to show their support and awareness for the causes discussed throughout the week. All funds raised were to help with extensions for the British International School, Hanoi garden which will soon have a free range chicken coup and many more trees for students to learn about and enjoy.

We are already looking forward to next year’s Green Week so we can continue to help raise awareness within the British International Schoo, Hanoi community about environmental issues around the world.
