Talking to Your Child About Changing Schools

Students Walking to School

A calm, confident guide for families navigating change

Families change schools for many reasons.

Sometimes it’s about finding the right learning environment. Often, it’s about life. A new job. A move within the city. A relocation to another state or country. Or a family decision that brings change earlier than expected.

This question comes up often in conversations with families applying to The British International School of Boston (BISB). Parents ask us how to talk to their children about moving schools in a way that feels honest, reassuring, and positive.

Changing schools is a big moment. The conversation matters.

Start with the reason that makes sense to your child

Children don’t need every detail. They need clarity and reassurance. Begin with the reason for the change, explained simply and calmly. You might say that your family is moving for work, or that you’ve found a school that better supports how they learn and grow.

When children understand the reason, even at a basic level, they feel more secure.

Listen before you explain

Give your child space to share how they feel. Ask open questions. What will you miss? What are you curious about? What feels exciting or worrying?

Listening shows your child that their feelings matter. It builds trust, even when change feels hard.

Be honest and age appropriate

Avoid overpromising. Avoid minimizing their worries. It’s okay to say that some parts may feel new or unfamiliar at first. What matters is letting them know they won’t face those feelings alone.

At BISB, wellbeing and belonging are part of everyday school life. Teachers know their students well and support them socially as well as academically.

Help them imagine what comes next

Children cope better when they can picture themselves in a new place. Visiting the school, meeting teachers, and seeing students learning together helps turn uncertainty into familiarity.

Talk about daily routines. Morning arrivals. Classrooms. Activities. Clubs. New friendships waiting to form.

Focus on growth, not loss

It’s natural for children to think about what they’re leaving behind. Acknowledge that. Then gently shift the conversation forward. New places bring new opportunities, new people, and new experiences.

At BISB, students benefit from personalized learning, world class teachers, and a global community that supports them through every transition.

Trust your child’s ability to adapt

With clear communication, consistency at home, and the right school support, children often settle faster than parents expect.

If your family is considering a move, whether local or international, we’re here to help you navigate the transition with confidence.
