As the PE department adds the finishing touches to preparations for this year’s Sports Day, excitement is building across the school. The event takes place on Friday, June 6th, at Montrose Fields, where over 550 students from BISC-LP—from our youngest in Pre-Nursery to our Year 6 students preparing to graduate—will come together for a celebration of physical activity and achievement.
For those unfamiliar with Sports Day, it’s a cherished British tradition. Schools invite their communities to join in a fun-filled, sports-themed day that showcases the skills and progress students have made in PE throughout the year. While sunny weather is always welcome, the event goes ahead rain or shine, with joy and enthusiasm leading the way.
Sports Day also marks the beginning of the end of the school year. It’s a time to celebrate accomplishments while reflecting on the year’s journey—something the PE team takes very seriously. Planning for the next academic year starts only after we’ve carefully reviewed the progress made.
Over the past year, we’ve seen incredible growth in our students—not only in their physical abilities but in their confidence and teamwork. From improving their fundamental movement skills—running faster, jumping higher, and throwing farther—to developing tactical awareness in sports like basketball, the progress has been inspiring. This was especially evident during the Bulldogs’ Basketball season in the spring term.
Beyond the physical, PE has played a vital role in our students’ social and emotional development. They’ve learned to show resilience when facing challenges, to communicate effectively, and to collaborate as part of a team. We create an environment where play, exploration, and encouragement help foster confidence and curiosity. When students are having fun, they’re far more likely to engage and grow.
Our Year 6 students, in particular, have learned that competitors can also be friends—bound by a shared love of sport. In April, over forty Year 6 students traveled to our partner school in Florida to compete in a multi-school event, making new connections with peers from 18 schools across the Americas.
At BISC-LP, our goal is to instill a lifelong love of physical activity. We offer a broad range of sports and experiences, knowing that while not every child will love every sport, we aim to spark a passion that encourages them to stay healthy and active. Our games curriculum includes access to specialist coaches with international experience in disciplines such as archery, taekwondo, and fencing—ensuring students are exposed to a wide variety of activities.
We are also proud of our staff, who model healthy, active lifestyles for our students. This year, eight of our teachers will be running the Chicago Marathon in October to raise funds for Lurie Children’s Hospital, a fantastic local charity. You can follow their training progress and sponsor their journey here.
To all the friends and families of the BISC-LP community, we hope you enjoy this year’s Sports Day and wish you a wonderful, active summer ahead.
