BISS Lions Men’s Varsity Volleyball – Week 1 Recap

The BISS Lions Men’s Varsity team opened their 2025 season with back-to-back matches that tested both their skill and resilience. With senior captain and setter Rico leading the way, the Lions are shaping an exciting future built on youthful talent, energy, and determination.

Game 1 – Thursday 18 September vs YCIS
The Lions’ season opener was a baptism of fire against a polished Gubei squad. Early nerves showed in the first set, where the opponent’s experience and power pushed the Lions into a tough 25–12 loss. But the Lions responded with grit in the second set. Behind Rico’s leadership, the younger players began to find their rhythm, competing with confidence and narrowing the gap to 25–18. While YCIS claimed the match, the Lions proved they could adapt quickly and grow stronger mid-game.

Game 2 – Saturday 20 September vs LFS Roosters
Two days later, the Lions were back on court against the athletic LFS Roosters. The first set saw the Lions take control early, showcasing clever ball movement and fearless play. For stretches, the Lions looked every bit the dominant side. But the Roosters surged back, using power and key defensive blocks to steal the set 25–20. The second set was a challenge for the young squad, as energy dipped and LFS pressed their advantage to close out the match 25–16.

Looking Ahead
The opening week has already revealed two important truths about the Lions: they possess standout individual talent, and with it, the potential to grow rapidly as a team. Captain Rico is steadily building the confidence of his younger teammates, guiding them as they adjust to the pace and demands of varsity competition.

BISS Lions D3 Girls Secure First Win of the Season

The BISS Lions D3 Girls recorded the programme’s first victory of the season on Thursday 18 September, with a 2–1 win over Shanghai Livingston.

The match was about more than just the scoreline - it was an opportunity for the Lions to focus on team management and development. Guided by the CFT Volleyball coaches, the players used the occasion to work on their rotations and build confidence in preparation for the upcoming U15 Volleyball event.

Final Score:
BISS def. SLAS (25–16, 24–26, 15–8)

Community Showcase – Saturday 20 September
That momentum carried into Saturday, when BISS proudly opened its doors to the Minhang and Qingpu communities for the Lions Round-Robin Showcase. In collaboration with CFT Volleyball, the event welcomed players and families into a fast-paced day of volleyball. Matches were designed to be short and intense - one set each - ensuring athletes faced varied competition while keeping the pace engaging and dynamic.

The aim was simple: to create meaningful opportunities for players to refine their skills, practise their rotations, and develop confidence through repetition. For our families, it was a chance to see their children grow on court, not only in ability but also in teamwork and communication. The atmosphere was full of energy, with smiling parents and determined young athletes enjoying every moment of the showcase.

We are thankful for the continued support of CFT Volleyball and proud to see our Lions community coming together to celebrate sport, development and growth.

Girls Varsity Volleyball – Week 1 Recap

The BISS Lions Varsity Girls kicked off their season with two home matches that tested their resilience, teamwork and ability to grow under pressure.

Game 1 – Thursday 18 September vs YCIS
The Lions battled hard against a disciplined YCIS squad in a match filled with long rallies and momentum swings. Both sides showed strong skills, but costly errors at the service line and difficulties in serve-receive tilted the balance towards the visitors. Misplaced passes and missed opportunities to build proper attacking plays meant the Lions couldn’t fully capitalise on their rallies. Despite flashes of individual brilliance, the Lions fell short, dropping the match 15–25, 14–25.

The takeaway: the talent is there, but consistency in serve accuracy, first-touch passing, and attacking decisions will be the keys to transforming effort into wins.

Game 2 – Saturday 20 September vs LFS Roosters
Two days later, the Lions roared back. With captain Lya forced to the sidelines due to injury, she shifted into a leadership role, mentoring Junior Varsity player Mishika, who stepped into the libero position with courage and composure.

Co-captain Florencia set the tone early, unleashing four powerful aces to open the match. Abril followed with steady, reliable serving that gave the Lions a 12–6 advantage. While unforced errors and late reactions allowed the Roosters to linger, the Lions showed grit, regrouping when it mattered most. Abril returned to the line to close the first set 25–18.

The second set carried a similar rhythm: bursts of dominance mixed with moments that gave the Roosters hope. But the Lions refused to let the match slip. With Abril’s consistency, Florencia’s serving power, and the team’s determination to fight for every ball, the Lions secured the set 25–15 and with it their first win of the season.

Looking Ahead
This week has already shown the Lions’ potential. The pieces are in place: Lya’s leadership on and off the court, Abril’s reliability in big moments, and Florencia’s serving firepower. If the team can cut down service errors, sharpen their passing, and keep their energy high from start to finish, they have the tools to turn good rallies into dominant performances.
