We began our English unit by reading an old tale with a modern twist ‘The Three Little Pugs and the Big Bad Cat’. We discussed the materials the Pugs used to make their houses and why.
The Year 1 children were excited to retell our story in their own words. They added adjectives and creative details to make their own innovate mini books increasing their vocabulary.
During our Continues Provision, the Year 1 children were challenged to make houses of different materials for our ‘3 little pugs’ living in our classroom. It was great to see the Year 1 children discovering what materials were strong, like wooden sticks, and what materials were easy to break, like sand and why.
It was pleasing to see how the children used their critical thinking skills to solve problems when building homes for the pugs. The children also became better friends because they had to collaborate and share many materials to ensure the pugs had a safe home.
