During the past two weeks, we have based our learning around on the story ‘Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes’.
To begin this topic, we had a special box. Inside the box, we found different items such as, school shoes, pens, paper and a school uniform. The Year 1s made some brilliant guesses about what our topic story would be. Following this activity, we read the story and sang a song all about rocking in our school shoes. We discussed how it felt to start a new school year and what we could do to make school fun and exciting. Every class made some amazing guitars that were taken on our special hunt to find Pete the Cat who was hiding around the school. We found him in the Playground, the Performing Arts Room, in the Dining Hall and in many other places.
This week we have begun writing sentences all about Pete the Cat. We discussed what Pete likes to wear, what he likes to eat and what special activities he enjoys doing. The students were very enthusiastic, and they used their creative skills to write amazing sentences that included capital letters, finger spaces and full stops! To end our week, we made our very own Petes, out of toilet tubes.
Using this story, our Year 1s have really enjoyed coming back to school and very quickly learnt how to understand their emotions, make new friends, and become more independent.
Well done Year 1. We cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
