Our Reception children have been busy little elves transforming our learning spaces, both indoors and outdoors, into a festive winter wonderland. In line with our All Around the World topic and recent discussions about recycling and reducing waste, we have moved away from plastic decorations and encouraged the children to create with natural and repurposed materials.

We have also shifted from product-focused art to process art, allowing children to explore their imaginations, make independent choices and express their creativity. From handmade ornaments to nature-inspired decorations, the children have taken great pride in creating a more sustainable Christmas atmosphere throughout the school. They have also been putting their new phonics knowledge to good use by writing lists to Santa and writing Christmas cards for their friends.

By using natural and repurposed materials, the children are learning how to make environmentally friendly choices and think creatively about the world around them. Our focus on process art also brings wonderful benefits: it strengthens imagination, supports problem-solving, builds language skills and boosts children’s confidence as they create freely without the pressure of a set outcome. This approach not only nurtures their creativity but also deepens their understanding of sustainability and the joy of expressive arts in Reception.
