Inspiring Young Writers Through the Power of Reading at BSB Sanlitun

Inspiring Young Writers Through the Power of Reading at BSB Sanlitun | BSB Sanlitun - Inspiring Young Writers

Why high-quality texts matter

At BSB Sanlitun, we believe that children become confident, thoughtful writers when they are immersed in rich, meaningful language. High-quality texts, those that stir imagination, provoke empathy, and model precise and powerful expression, are at the heart of this process. When pupils read widely and deeply, they develop a bank of ideas, vocabulary, and sentence patterns that naturally shape their own writing. Exposure to such texts not only strengthens technical skill but also nurtures a genuine love of stories and storytelling.

Our approach: The Power of Reading and Ready Steady Write

To ensure that every child experiences the best of children’s literature, we have implemented The Power of Reading andReady Steady Write programmes across our primary classrooms. These approaches complement each other: The Power of Reading uses whole-class engagement with high-quality texts to explore themes, characters, and language through discussion, drama, and creative responses, while Ready Steady Write provides a clear, sequenced framework for planning and structuring written outcomes.

This combination allows teachers to model expert writing and guide pupils step by step through the process. This involves every step on the writing process, from capturing ideas to refining sentences and editing for effect. Lessons are rooted in purpose and audience, helping children see writing as a powerful form of communication, not just a classroom task.

Building expertise through collaboration and coaching

As with all areas of our curriculum, professional development underpins our success. Teachers and teaching assistants receive ongoing training to ensure consistent delivery of both programmes and to deepen their understanding of how high-quality texts can drive writing progress. Staff collaborate to share practice, analyse pupil writing, and plan next steps, ensuring that every child’s learning journey is coherent and ambitious.

Learning beyond the classroom: Chris Whitney's visit

Recently, we were delighted to welcome Chris Whitney, a nationally recognised writing consultant from the UK, to BSB Sanlitun. She led a staff INSET day on 21 November, conducted classroom visits, workshops and coaching from 24–26 November, and hosted a special Parent Academy on 26 November. Her workshop focused on how parents can inspire a love of reading and writing at home. Nurturing creativity and confidence in young writers is most effective when home and school work hand in hand.

Looking ahead

Through The Power of Reading and Ready Steady Write, our pupils are discovering that great writing begins with great reading. As they explore powerful stories, experiment with language, and share their own voices, they are developing skills that will serve them across every subject and throughout their lives. With continued professional growth for staff and active partnership with our families, BSB Sanlitun remains committed to inspiring the next generation of readers and writers.
