Enrichment Workshop for Year 6 Led by Jacana Project

Year 6 Student on a drawing of a threatened bird species of Myanmar

The Jacana Project is a not for profit organisation currently producing an illustrated field guide to the birds of Myanmar. Through this workshop, our students saw first-hand how learning can connect directly to purpose, impact, and even future careers.

The day began with an engaging presentation from the Jacana Project’s lead ornithologist, who introduced students to the fascinating world of birds and answered their questions in a lively Q&A session. This was followed by a creative workshop led by two professional artists, who modelled techniques from scientific illustration. Students then applied these methods to draw and paint threatened and endemic bird species, producing beautiful and detailed work that reflected both skill and imagination.

“Beyond artistic confidence and technical ability, the workshop deepened students’ understanding of local biodiversity, conservation challenges, and the importance of protecting Myanmar’s natural heritage. It also strongly supported BSY’s wider curriculum aims by promoting scientific curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Special thanks to the Jacana Project team and Mrs Akinci for this wonderful learning opportunity,” Mrs Mundy, Year 6 Teacher, mentioned.

Mrs Akinci, our Head of Art, is excited to continue building this project, offering further contemporary and creative opportunities linked to conservation themes in upcoming art lessons.

This enrichment workshop was a powerful example of how BSY connects classroom learning with real-world issues, inspiring students to think critically, act responsibly, and appreciate the beauty and fragility of the natural world, while allowing students’ creative talents flourish.

At the beginning of Term 3, BSY was delighted to welcome the Jacana Project into school for a bespoke enrichment workshop that combined ornithology and art for our Year 6 students. This inspiring experience brought together arts education, real-world conservation learning, and hands-on skill development.
