Student Leadership in Middle School
By: Isabel Urrutia, Middle School Counselor

Students can demonstrate their leadership skills in Middle School through their membership in the Student Council. Membership in this organization allows Middle School students to learn about leadership and put it into practice. Students grow in many other ways besides the academic one. Students learn to balance their membership in this organization and their school work in order to become successful at both. Students also learn to socialize and interact with other students nationally and internationally. The Student Council takes part in the AASCA Leadership Conference which is held in different Central American countries each year.

This coming week Middle School students will be choosing the Student Council that will represent them for the rest of the year. We have three different parties running for election and they will be running their campaigns from Sept. 2 to Sept. 9. On Wednesday, Sept. 9 students will deliver their speeches during an assembly in which they will share their campaign ideas and goals for this school year. Students will cast their vote right after our school assembly and results will be given on the same day.

So, what does leadership mean?

A leader is someone who has a goal or belief and is able to convince or influence others to follow it. It would then seem logical that leaders have some form of power by which they are able to convince others to achieve the same goal or adopt the same belief. However, leadership in itself is neither good nor bad. Societal values determine whether the leadership of an individual is positive or negative, based on the goals and results being pursued and, on the means, used to influence others.

There are 10 student leader qualities which all positive leaders possess: goal oriented, honest, hard-working, willingness to serve others, a good listener, a good communicator, a good decision-maker, encouraging, positive and responsible. As teachers and parents, we must make an effort to encourage our children to be the kind of leaders that the world needs and prepare them to thrive in the world of the future.

6th graders in Mr. Wittman’s math classes took their first math assessments virtually this week, although many said they preferred the “fun quizzes” over the test!
