A new way of seeing: Champittet IB students explore self-expression through the visual arts

IB Art Option - IB Art Option

One of the benefits of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at Collège Champittet is that it offers a well-rounded education in diverse subjects – including the arts.

Seven of our IB students are currently studying the visual arts at Collège Champittet. In this course, our students not only analyse different artworks but take risks in creating their own original pieces. As our student Anna says, “The visual arts course gives us a chance to have more freedom and to experiment with diverse media.” It’s a welcome opportunity to explore creativity and self-expression.

Studying the visual arts at Collège Champittet

In this IB course, our budding artists work with many different techniques, such as lithography, cyanotype, sculpture, oil painting and acrylic painting. They also make connections between the arts and other disciplines, with spectacular results: for example, one student recently took inspiration from the Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus to develop an original lithography.

After gaining exposure to different techniques, our arts students must focus on two different media: lithography and another preferred medium. Our 13th graders, who are in the first year of the IBDP, work on developing different themes and projects, while our 14th graders work on putting together their final exhibition. All the while, our teacher provides support, guidance and encouragement.

Assessment is based on three key components: a comparison of three artworks by different artists, periods and contexts (20%), a portfolio and explanation of the art-making process (40%), and an exhibition of different original artworks (40%).

As our students will agree, studying the visual arts is a rewarding experience in and of itself. We are immensely proud of our talented young artists, and we invite you to join us for an exhibition of their work on 28 March 2025, from 3 to 6pm, in the Foyer at the Fondation Général Guisan. Everybody is welcome!
