With the structure being a little different this year and split into two pools, it was vital the boys won the group to have the opportunity to get a gold medal, so with this in mind, Mr. Liperis went for an attacking formation to get the goals early on. The first game started against DCSG with the Lions winning 2-1 to secure their first win of the day.
They then went on to beat AIS 2-0 in a convincing performance, although with SJII winning two games before hand, they seemed to be the team the Lions would need to challenge for top spot. A superb goal from Ryota from the half way line put the boys ahead but a few minutes later SJII equalised. This was a tense game but Cael who is new to Dover Court put in a great cross for Bertie to tap home. This was to prove the most vital goal of the tournament as it put DCIS in top spot. The boys later beat Gems 5-0 with a hat-trick from Cael and then drew with Global Indian school, although by this point they were already in the final and able to save their energy in rotations.
The final was set and Nexus who also hadn't lost a game were the Lions' opponents. The boys had heard stories of how good they were, but no one was going to beat our boys on this occasion and they came out the blocks fast, scoring two goals early on and then scored another after half time, to top off the perfect day. Ryota and Subaru created what I can only describe as an unbelievable football goal.
With few goals conceded, our defenders, Yusei, Alfie and Jake were solid and Felix made some great catches during nervous times. George's effort and passing for the goals also greatly contributed to the team winning the gold.
Well done to the boys!
Come on you Dover Lions!
