Last week, the year 12 and 13 IB students were invited to visit the world class, A* STAR Microscopy Platform, down the road, at Biopolis.

We were given a tour by the director, Dr. Graham Wright and the Head of Electron Microscopy, Dr. David Liebl. Our students were amazed by the beautiful images produced by the light and fluorescence microscopes and learning, not only about the Physics behind this amazing technology but it’s immediate use for all the researchers at Biopolis. Across the road, in the basement, we discovered the SEM and TEM microscopes and turned our hand at cutting a sample, with the aid of a diamond knife, to a thickness of no more than 50nm! We were so proud of the enthusiasm shown and questions asked by our students. They were very obviously inspired by the afternoon and seeing where a degree in the Sciences can lead. A thank you as well to Dr. Goh Wah Ing, Ms Khadijah Zulkifli and Ms Yang Qiaohui who took time out of their busy research to inspire us with their work!
