Congratulations to the LCIS MYP3 team who gained a prize at last week's Globe Day annual science conference! The La Côte International School Secondary students that took part in this event thoroughly enjoyed their day and were true ambassadors for the school representing the Science Department in its very best light.

Globe Day 2018

On Friday last week, La Côte International School NASA Globe club members took part in the annual "Globe Day - Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment" at Leysin American School together with other 150 students aged between 14 to 18 from several international schools in Western Switzerland.

Max, Dan, Yassin and Brecon from LCIS were privileged enough to bring home a prize for their investigation: “Does wifi affect the growth of a mesocosm?”. This was a great achievement considering that they were one of the top five teams to won a prize at the GLOBE Day conference.

The GLOBE initiative is an international science and educational programme set up by NASA, which provides students and the general public with the opportunity to participate in data collection and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment.

La Côte International School presented two projects, which were devised and carried out by two separate groups of LCIS students. Each project team had to present their data and methodology to other students, staff and guest speakers, knowing that they were being marked on their presentation, as well as their investigative and theoretical skills.

This annual science conference, held at Leysin American School, gives students the opportunity to participate in a science conference alongside their peers, to conduct “independent” research and distill this into a presentable science poster, as well as listen to short keynote speeches by well-known scholars.

This year's keynote speakers were Mary Ford, the Director of Education Programs at National Geographic Society, and Margaret Gold, Science Community Coordinator at the Natural History Museum in London.
