Student Clubs

To promote the all-round development of our students, at the Metropolitan School of Panama we offer a range of year-long clubs. These clubs are student-led with the support of a faculty advisor and provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, collaboration and make positive contributions to their school and local communities.

Some of the year-long clubs that operate annually at the MET are:

Model United Nations

The MET’s Model United Nations (MUN) is not just a club, it’s an experience; an amazing opportunity to debate with students from all over the world and represent delegates of the United Nations. Being a part of the MUN team at the MET means that you are constantly aiming to improve your debating, public speaking and leadership skills, while engaging in stimulating arguments and learning about international affairs, socio-political issues and diplomacy.

Since 2012, our MUN Team has participated in national inter-school conferences as well as international conferences hosted at the United Nations offices in New York and Washington which unites delegates from all across the globe.

Our robotics team has grown bigger and stronger each year. Our Elementary School robotics team meets bi-weekly to devise creative solutions to real-life problems through robot programming.

In 2018, our Robotics Team participated in its first international competition at the Lego Junior Master Model Builder Championships, winning 6th place out 63 teams from around the world. They also placed 2nd for their excellent teamwork!

Environmental Club

Each year our Secondary School’s Environmental Club brings forth new environmental initiatives to improve our school’s sustainable goals. Yearly, they organize school-wide activities like our annual Beach Clean-Up and Earth Week that have become traditions within our school’s community. They have also led projects for our student body to recycle materials, implement sustainable practices in our cafeteria, environmental movie nights, a herb garden, recycled art projects, among others.

Our Environmental Club’s passion for the environment has provided them the opportunity to present their initiatives to renowned anthropologist and UN Peace Ambassador, Dr. Jane Goodall, and present at the Smithsonian’s annual Earth Optimism Symposium.

Operation Smile Club

Founded in 2012, our school’s Operation Smile Club has grown throughout the years, changing the lives of children both locally as well as internationally, raising awareness of this non-for-profit organization that provides free surgery to children with cleft lip and palate around the world.

Through their hard work and dedication, our Middle School and High School volunteers have participated in several missions throughout Panama to provide support to patients and their families and make them feel safe and loved as they await life changing surgeries.

Our club volunteers also participate in national and international Youth Leadership Conferences, local fundraisers, and organize campaigns to raise awareness of the Operation Smile mission in their communities.

Drama Club

Our drama club was initiated in 2017 by a group of passionate and engaged High School students. The club became instantly successful, performing two productions that same spring. Two one-act plays were selected by the students, and enjoyed by all. The excellent casts included students from grades 7-12 as well as Secondary School faculty.

The comedic version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, titled “Hamlette”, was performed in the MPR, after which the amused audience moved to the 4th floor theater to enjoy “The Big Bad Musical”. In the Spring 2018 production, our club performed a revue written by our Secondary School Principal called “Clayton’s Got Talent”.

Elementary School Choir

Our Elementary School choir is composed of 2nd-4th grade students that come together at recess united by their love for music. Our students’ repertoire spans a range of children’s songs from around the world — a true reflection of our school’s international and multicultural community. Together they sing and celebrate diversity through music.

The choir has become so successful that they have been invited to sing in 2018 at Panama’s National Library, a selection of songs by Panamanian composer, Gonzalo Brenes, in celebration of the late artist’s birth date.

Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination works with teachers to develop STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) challenges that teach students the 21st-century skills needed to succeed in school, university and life beyond. In solving each challenge, students learn each step of the creative process — a powerful learning tool that teachers children how to assess problems, reflect on their progress, learn from failure and bring their original ideas to life.

Students who participate in our program have the opportunity to present their solutions at a local tournament and if they qualify at the state level, they’re invited to participate in Global Finals, a culminating international tournament that celebrates global creativity and collaboration.
