Apps to support basic numeracy skills

07 May 2015

For the last two weeks I have talked about apps to support literacy – specifically apps that allow children to create digital stories and books.

This week I would like to share with you some apps we use at school to support basic numeracy skills. There are a huge number of apps available that allow children to practise different aspects of mathematics, but the apps that I am bringing to your attention allow children to practise their four number operations (+ – x ÷) in a fun and simple way.

The apps below are created by a company called Primary Games Ltd and are part of the resources we use in school called ‘Interactive Resources’. The apps are all currently available on Apple devices and are approximately VND20,000 per app.

There are a range of games. Some require children to recall their times tables as quickly as they can to climb a mountain. Others require children to blast ghosts corresponding to the correct addition or mulitiplcation sum. One of my favourites is ‘Airport Arithmetic’ that requires chilldren to choose the correct operation to successfully allow a plane to depart.

Please download some of these over the holiday so that your children can practise their numeracy skills in a fun and interactive way.
