BVIS HCMC Tanzania Expedition 2019 Hành trình Tanzania

Making a Positive Difference in Tanzania!

After months of planning and preparation the day has finally arrived ... it’s time for BVIS to go to Tanzania!

Day 1 & 2 (21st & 22nd October 2019) - Tanzania here we come!

After months of planning and preparation the day has finally arrived ... it’s time for BVIS to go to Tanzania!

At 3pm on Monday 21st October all students and staff met at school to do one last equipment check. We then went to the airport and travelled from HCMC - DOHA. When we arrived we were then whisked off to a lovely hotel to sleep for a few hours before our next flight. At 6am it was time to wake up and get our next flight. We quickly checked in and hopped on board Qatar airlines to travel to Dar Es Salam, Tanzania. The airline crew were so friendly and even gave Giang a special surprise to celebrate her birthday on the flight!

We then arrived in Tanzania and made our way to the fantastic Nord Anglia camp. Along the way we saw incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

The camp was so beautiful and green, set in the lovely countryside. Then we had dinner and had the rest of the evening to relax. Tomorrow two other schools will arrive and the activities will begin!

Day 3 (23 October 2019)

After a well-deserved sleep the students met for a banquet breakfast with the newly arrived team from The British International School, Houston. Once in their activity groups it was time for a photography competition! Pictures of the local wildlife were captured and shared by all.

It was not long until our students were meeting more new friends as the school from Nanjing, China arrived after a hearty lunch.

There was some time for relaxation before dinner with the football pitch, and swimming pool being taken advantage of (well done to Timmy Le for scoring 2 goals in a 5-1 victory!).

Kim and Giang had a surprise birthday cake and were sung to by a room of around 50 people as an early night was sought before the adventure really begins tomorrow.

Miss Hardiman's group head for their Safari as Mr Every's start work on building the Secondary School.

All are well and remain in good spirits.

Day 4 (24 October 2019)
Construction Day! Can they build it? - Yes they can!

Over the last few years Nord Anglia students from around the world have been building  schools for the local children. A nursery and primary school have provided a safe and local place for students to get an education.

These projects have been so successful that they now need a secondary school and sixth form. As one half of the group headed for Safari the other began construction on a 12 acre site that will one day be home to around 1,000 children. This new school will save students walking up to 15miles to their current school on dangerous, dark roads.

BVIS HCMC Tanzania Expedition 2019 | Hành trình Tanzania

It was a long, hard day best summarized by the students themselves;

"This is the first step towards making a secondary school!" - Ben

"Everyone’s is soooo tired" - Melissa

"I am a professional builder now!" - Giang

Day 5 (25 October 2019) - Safari here we come!

Over the past 2 days Miss Hardiman's group has been on safari travelling through Tarangire National Park!

Tarangire National Park is a national park in Tanzania's Manyara Region. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season.

They have seen elephants, lions, zebra, antelope and much more. They even got to camp in the national park over night and see the beautiful stars. What a fantastic 2 days!

Tanzania Expedition 2019 - A Reflection by Nguyen Thuc Minh Khanh (Nancy)

“The Tanzania trip 2019 was undoubtedly one of the best trips I've ever been to.

Our time was divided between a safari, building a secondary school and volunteering at a nearby village to build a goat shed, solar powered lights and a smokeless stove. During the safari me and my friends watched the incredible animals in their natural habitat and listened to our instructor John telling us interesting facts about the nature while we could watch the surroundings with binoculars. We also had the chance to stand at the front of the truck to watch the lovely sunset.

The construction volunteering days were a good fun too. We all learnt how to lay bricks, mix cement and build a shed from scratch. Being able to see how your project really makes a positive difference to the families and community made me feel very proud and satisfied.

This trip has made me change how I see the world around me significantly now that I have witnessed the poor living conditions that so many people in the world are still suffering from. This trip has also made me realise and appreciate how lucky I am to be born in such a privileged family with so many opportunities and rights that I always had taken for granted.

Thank you to Ms Hardiman, Mr Every and to the BVIS for giving us this fantastic opportunity.”
