Upcycle your old uniforms, why not?

Following a fantastic initiative from our sister school BIS HCMC, the BVIS Upcycle Project has been created by BVIS HCMC’s teachers and students with the aims of reducing the uniform waste each year, raising awareness toward environment protection and inspiring our community to creatively take the action.

The BVIS Upcycle Project Story

Anyone who has visited the Principal’s Office would have noticed the 3 adorable chickens upcycled from BIS HCMC’s uniforms on his desk. Being involved in the similar project previously in BIS HCMC, Mr Simon Higham, our Principal at BVIS HCMC is happy to share about why BVIS developed and launched the Upcycle Project.

BVIS Upcycle Project

Firstly, we are all familiar with our children in beautiful uniforms every day, which helps them to show respect and pride in themselves as well as giving them a positive identity within the wider community. The change in school branding lead to a number of BVIS uniforms becoming redundant and unused in school stock. Students quickly grow out of their current uniform and this has posed an important issue to both parents and school: where can we take this old uniform and what can we do with it once it has been collected?

BVIS HCMC Upcycle Project

BVIS is well known for our great care and actions towards the environment so we wanted something to be done. Therefore, we are delighted to introduce the brand new BVIS Upcycle Project to both help parents across our community and create a project that helps teach our children about the concept of upcycling – making something from a product that is even better the second time around! It is also a great project for parents to get involved in and we would welcome any volunteers who want to be part of it”

About the BVIS Upcycle Project

The BVIS Upcycle Project decided to use school’s old uniforms to create small, creative, and lovely pieces such as cup holders, head bandanas, face masks and bags. This allowed close collaboration among those within our school community, including the leadership and admin teams to generate initial ideas and organising production. Furthermore, our Community Service Coordinators and student leaders are now overseeing the promotion and selling of these upcycled items during lunchtimes and after schools.

BVIS HCMC Upcycle Project

It’s great to see such meaningful initiatives at BVIS. The project is well in line with the Global Goals focus at BVIS this year, including Goal 13 - Climate Action. The largest challenge is bringing this to the attention of other students, and I will work closely with my peers to best promote this among Secondary. Thuy Anh, a member of the Secondary Community Leaders Team shared

What makes the Upcycle Project even more meaningful is that all profits will be used to support our community partners including Rang Dong School, Pham Hung School and Green Bamboo Shelter under the support of Ms Nga Huynh and Ms Georgina Hardiman.

I think that the best way to promote this among Primary friends is direct communication. We will be talking face to face with friends about this to raise awareness and encourage everyone to buy these items and recycle their old uniform. Nhat Lam, a member of the Primary Community Leaders stated

Looking to the future, the next phase of the project involves a strong support from BVIS families and students to purchase the items and help us to advertise the project further. Stay tuned for further updates in the upcoming time. Start collecting all of your old uniforms and wait for more information soon about where to bring it for collection.

All items will be on sale from Monday 05th October 2020 onwards. Let’s join us to make a difference for our society!

If you purchase the items, shout out to us on social by using the hashtags #BVISUpcycleProject #BVISHCMC #BVISThoiLanGioXanhVaoDongPhucCu!
