Reading & Literacy Skills

Reading opens new doors for students and is the key to developing a lifelong love of learning. At the British Vietnamese International School, we recognise the transformative impact that comes when your child develops a passion for reading.

We strive to provide a rounded bilingual education so our library has an incredible catalogue of more than 70,000 books in both Vietnamese and English. There is literally something for everybody, from magazines to encyclopaedias.

The library forms a hub of learning between Primary and Secondary schools and opportunities are provided for the secondary students to support the reading of the younger students. We also provide eBooks and audio recordings, so children can access a wide range of resources on their own devices.

Literacy Development Programmes

At BVIS we have a range of programmes designed to develop your child’s reading and comprehension skills. Some of our initiatives include:

  • Students in Year 6 and 7 have access to Accelerated Reader, an international program used by thousands of schools around the world. The frequent quizzes that students complete upon finishing their books allows teachers and parents to better understand the development of a child’s reading skills.
  • 20% of the English curriculum time for Years 7,8, 9 and 10 is dedicated to fostering a love of reading. Each week students spend one of their English lessons reading a book of their choice. This allows them to experience ideas and knowledge that they might not otherwise encounter in their day-to-day lessons.
  • Throughout the year we run a range of activities in the library to foster a love of literacy.  World Book Day is a very popular event in the school, with activities taking place throughout the day.
  • We work with schools from the local community by providing an after-school Reading Development Club.
  • The ‘Reading Without Walls Challenge’ is designed to encourage students throughout the school to develop the scope of their reading experiences by rewarding those who explore a variety of genres and topics, both fiction and non-fiction.

Helping From Home

Learning to read isn’t something children just do at school and we recognise how vital it is for parents to be involved in a child’s learning journey.

Our experienced team of teachers and support staff run a series of workshops throughout the year to provide parents with practical strategies to enable them to best support their children.
