Connecting Students Around the World!

28 novembre 2014

La Côte International School is one of 31 schools worldwide in the Nord Anglia Education family; that’s 20,000 students, across 13 countries! And being part a global community brings many benefits. As educators, teachers both at LCIS and in all the other schools in the NAE group are constantly discussing how best we can prepare our students so that they can succeed in the rapidly changing world of the 21st Century.

‘Global awareness’ is an important and key skill through which our students are encouraged to be knowledgeable and empathetic citizens. Addressing global issues and developing a keen awareness of other cultures, traditions and religions, of nations and their politics, in the spirit of mutual respect, plays a fundamental role in our school ethos and programmes.

With this in mind, at LCIS we are hugely keen advocates of Nord Anglia Education’s ‘Global Classroom’. The Global Classroom is a powerful online learning platform which connects NAE students from its schools around the world, and which enables our school community in Aubonne, Switzerland to get involved with dynamic projects, challenges and competitions, debates, forums and face-to-face expeditions, all of which are aimed to motivate and extend learning, anytime, anywhere.

Students work independently and collaboratively, encouraged by their teachers, to develop their passions, widen their interests, ask questions, seek answers and challenge themselves. Here are just a few quotes from our students:

  • The Global Classroom is an interesting and fun way to talk to other students your own age around the world. (Charlie)
  • You can find out lots of interesting information and apply it to your own classroom and your own learning. (Elin)
  • There are many different things to discuss, to suit everyone’s interests. (Evie)

A new initiative launched this year on the Global Classroom is the GC Passport in our Primary area. Like most passports, the GC version is a ‘travel’ document which supports and records students’ navigation around the many learning zones. These spaces include ‘The Culture Zone’, ‘The Think Tank’, ‘Have Your Say!’, ‘Global Matters’, ‘The Great Debate’ and ‘Mind Games’.

Children can access the GC from school or from home, via the school portal which means they can collaborate, discuss, chat and compete with fellow students anywhere, anytime. If parents click on the Global Classroom, they will find a dedicated area just for them!

Recently, as part of the Primary Global Classroom Club, a group of Primary students wrote, directed, filmed and edited a promotional video for Global Classroom. Primary Global Classroom lead teacher Helen Baker says, "They talked about the different forums, the new design and layout, how they have become more knowledgeable from the activities and how new users can benefit from Global Classroom". This video has been sent off to the GC headquarters and will be available for all users to view.
