Biography
Gerald creates an environment where every child knows to put in 100% to do their best, as well as feels comfortable to be themselves and form strong friendships with other students. With a stepmother who is a qualified child-psychologist, he is a firm believer in whole-child learning and in developing positive learning behaviours to benefit not only a student's academic results, but also their social and overall executive function development. To further this he regularly deploys differentiated tasks and instruction, cooperative learning activities and a variety of instructional methods aimed at encouraging children to develop their ability to manage and be responsible for their learning.
Gerald began teaching as an English as a Second Language teacher in Depok, Jakarta, where he worked for 2 years. Following this he worked in Italy for a year, learning to accept and eventually appreciate that it is essentially a country that is just permanently in-between meals. He returned to the UK to gain his Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Education at Goldsmith’s University London before working at Barham Primary School in his NQT year, where with his ESL background he ran additional lessons for students acquiring English as a new language. Appreciating that there is never a dull day in Jakarta, he returned in 2016 and has been working in International Baccalaureate schools since. He is looking forward to working within a rigorous curriculum and working environment once again.
Outside of school Gerald enjoys working as a semi-professional photographer and has had work published in The Guardian, as well as taking commissioned projects. As is a prequisite for anyone who enjoys living in this part of the world, he enjoys travelling along with his wife Dwi. He enjoys cooking, but his wife hates the mess he makes in doing so!
