Learning Beyond the Classroom

Recently, our Year 4 students enjoyed a thoroughly enriching visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, where they explored the remarkable diversity of traditional Indonesian houses. This visit directly supported our International Primary Curriculum (IPC) unit Houses and Homes, which investigates how and why homes are designed differently around the world.

The opportunity to see traditional architecture in person transformed abstract concepts into tangible understanding. Students moved beyond textbook images and classroom discussions to experience the scale, detail and cultural significance of these structures in person.

Discovering How Environment and Culture Shape Design

During the trip, students were able to see how geography, climate, culture and available materials influence architecture and daily life. The self-exploration format allowed them to discover these connections at their own pace, examining details that caught their attention.

Students observed the high, curved roofs of the Rumah Gadang, which reflect Minangkabau identity whilst serving practical purposes. The elevated structures of the Rumah Bolon demonstrated how raising houses above ground level protects against flooding and wildlife. In contrast, the compact design of the Rumah Honai helps retain warmth in Papua's cooler highlands, showing how the same principle of matching design to environment produces different solutions for different challenges.

The distinctive structures of the Rumah Tongkonan and the Rumah Joglo revealed how social structure, tradition and craftsmanship shape homes. The Rumah Tongkonan's elaborate carved decorations demonstrate how buildings communicate cultural stories whilst the Rumah Joglo's layout reflects social organisation within traditional Javanese society. Students could see how the arrangement of spaces within a home reveals cultural priorities about family structure, hospitality and community relationships.

These observations connected directly to concepts students had been exploring in their International Primary Curriculum (IPC) unit, reinforcing their understanding that homes are designed with intention, reflecting the needs, values and identities of the people who build and inhabit them.

The Power of Real-World Experience

By experiencing these buildings in real life rather than simply studying them in the classroom, students were able to make meaningful connections between environment, culture and design. Walking through actual structures provided sensory information that photographs and descriptions cannot convey.

Students experienced the coolness of elevated floors, the way light filters through traditional materials and the sense of space created by different roof heights. They observed construction techniques and material choices up close, seeing how builders work with locally available resources to create durable, appropriate housing.

The self-exploration approach encouraged students to engage actively with what they observed. Rather than passively receiving information during a guided lecture, they looked, questioned and drew their own conclusions about why houses were designed in particular ways.

This active engagement deepens learning. When students discover insights themselves, they remember them more effectively than when simply told facts. The visit created opportunities for genuine curiosity-driven exploration that classroom lessons cannot replicate.

Houses as Reflections of Life

The visit brought our International Primary Curriculum (IPC) topic vividly to life, deepening students' understanding that a house is not just a building but a reflection of people, place and way of life. This central concept of the Houses and Homes unit became concrete rather than abstract through direct experience.

Students could now connect their classroom learning about how different factors influence housing design to specific real examples they had explored themselves. When discussing climate adaptation, they can reference the elevated Rumah Lamin. When considering cultural expression through architecture, they can describe the carved details of the Rumah Tongkonan.

These concrete references strengthen their analytical thinking. Rather than discussing housing design in general terms, they can compare specific examples, identifying similarities and differences based on firsthand observation.

Connecting to Our International Community

For our international student community, this visit held particular significance. Students from diverse backgrounds explored Indonesian architectural traditions together, learning about the cultural heritage of their host country.

This experience supports our commitment to global citizenship. Students develop respect for different cultural traditions and understanding that there are multiple valid approaches to solving universal human needs like shelter.

Indonesian students in Year 4 gained new appreciation for their country's architectural diversity. Students from other countries broadened their understanding of how culture shapes the physical environment. Together, they practised the curiosity and respect that characterise effective global citizens.

Learning That Lasts

Trips like this visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah exemplify our approach to education. We believe students learn most effectively when they engage with real-world examples, ask authentic questions and make personal discoveries.

The Houses and Homes IPC unit will continue in the classroom, building on the foundation this visit established. Students now have shared reference points for discussions about architectural adaptation, cultural expression through building design and the relationship between environment and shelter.

More importantly, they've experienced learning as exploration and discovery. They've seen that education extends beyond textbooks to include the world around them. These lessons about how to learn will serve them long after specific facts about Indonesian traditional houses fade from memory.

At Nord Anglia School Jakarta, we create opportunities for students to connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences. The Year 4 visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah demonstrates this commitment in action, bringing curriculum to life through meaningful, memorable learning adventures.
