Music: Visits from The Juilliard School and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra

Visits from Richard Russell, Pete Fry, and Kathryn Andersen highlighted a busy week in music at St Andrews International School Bangkok.

Primary School Music

Last Week of Term T1.1 - Visitors Galore!!

We had a very busy musical week before our well earned holiday!

On Monday we welcomed some very special visitors from the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, based in London. Richard Russell, Clarinetist, and Pete Fry, double bassist, offered their time whilst on a tour of South East Asia, which included a special memorial concert  for the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, held at the Thailand Cultural Centre. They met with some of our clarinet and string players from STA Band to share some insights into their particular instruments, playing and practice techniques, as well as performing for the children. Pete took his huge and wonderful double bass on a tour of our KS1 canteens to entertain the children during lunchtime. This was a great opportunity for the children to listen to the unique timbral sound of the double bass.

On Wednesday, our first Juilliard visitor of the year, Kathryn Andersen, joined us in school. She taught some lessons based on the Juilliard core works by Bach and Stravinsky, which formed the basis of some interesting discussion with all the Primary and HS music team. Year 6 violinists used their voices and percussion instruments to put their own unique sound onto one of Stravinsky’s melodic fragments from the Rite of Spring. They also composed some musical interruptions and compared these with Stravinsky’s own versions. The Year 5 violinists worked on performing musical phrases from one of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites in different ways so as to make it sound as if two people were having a conversation. They had some great ideas for creating contrast.

Kathryn Andersen also joined our STA Sing groups on Wednesday after school. She and the children explored an idea used by Mozart in his opera ‘The Magic Flute’ where different emotions are conveyed using only one syllable in someone’s name. It really got the children using their voices, facial expression and body language in creative ideas and communicating clearly!

Miss Kathryn has left us something interesting to look at too. Over the past 2 weeks children have been putting their questions to Miss Kathryn on our notice board using post-it notes. Well, now there are lots of new post-it notes with Miss Kathryn’s answers. If you are interested to find out more about the life of a musician and more about Juilliard please come along and read her answers!
