High School: At a loss for words

Simon Lawrence

Last week’s events in the High School have been overshadowed by the tragic news about Simon Lawrence. A letter was emailed to all High School parents. If you have not already read this, it is on the school’s website here: https://www.nordangliaeducation.com/schools/bangkok/article/2017/9/4/in-remembrance-simon-lawrence-1967-2017

  • It was great to see to many Year 7 parents at last week’s first Parents' Information Evening of the new school year, and we are looking forward to seeing more parents at this week’s Year 8 and Year 9 events, taking place on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. After the presentations from Mr Paul, Mr Andrew, Mr Eoin and myself, and some time with Tutors, the Year 7 parents had a tour of the Red Building, seeing our the Canteen, the Atrium, and some of our new Art, Computer Science, Design Technology and Science rooms.

New HS teachers
  • All of the Year 7 Tutors are new to St Andrews, so the Year 7 parents have started to meet our new teachers. It has been great to have so many new teachers begin at the school this year, and I know that they will make a huge contribution to both teaching and learning and the wider life of the school in their time at St Andrews. All of their profiles will be added to the school’s website very soon, but in the meantime this pdf gives a brief overview. Parents of students in 8f, 8g, 8h, 9f. 9g and 9h will meet their son/daughter’s new Tutors this week.

  • The new High School Canteen got busier every day last week, selling more lunches every day, but the queues got faster and faster as students got used to the system. Following a discussion with the Student Leadership Team on Friday, we are trying a different queuing system this week, with students queueing according to the different station that they will be eating from (Snackshop, Western, Live Cooking, Vegetarian, Thai or Noodles) and today was our fastest ever day, with no queue left before 1pm. The new system allows students to choose which queue they join, so that those who wish to eat faster and then go to a meeting or activity during lunchtime can choose to join a shorter queue. As last week, we will review the week in Friday’s Student Leadership Team meeting and decide whether to keep this new system or adjust it further.

  • Term 1 ECA signups went live on Saturday, and already hundreds of students have signed up for a huge range of ECAs being offered this term. Parents and students have until Wednesday this week to sign up, before students are allocated to ECAs in time to begin after school next Monday.

  • Finally, this morning saw the opening of our new Swimming Pool, with Year 9 students the first in. As we have said, and will continue to say at this week and next week’s Parents' Information Evenings, our new High School is still not quite finished, but it is great to see such visible signs of progress.

I look forward to showing many Year 8 and 9 parents the progress being made in our new High School on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
