Drama: ISTA reflections and tickets on sale for Peter Pan

A Year 10 student at St Andrews International School Bangkok reflects on her experience at the ISTA festival in Jakarta...Letters have now gone to Year 9 students interested in the middle school ISTA Festival in March...Tickets are on sale for the KS3 production of Peter Pan.

ISTA was a mind opening experience. I learned to work with many different people, using a number of different techniques. I was also in a new environment, so it forced me out of my comfort zone. I use the word ‘forced’ very lightly, because I was very excited to be a part of this experience, but it definitely made me get out of my comfort zone.

In terms of meeting new people, it really encouraged me to own my confidence and speak up more. In the beginning I was quite skeptical of the people there because I am a very shy person but, looking back, I’m glad I opened up, and I truly believe it was because I was surrounded by people who lifted each other up and helped each other gain confidence.

The different methods we used gave me an idea or two to take back home and I incorporated them into my own piece for Drama. We learned a lot about expressing emotion. We also got to engage with students who were less privileged, and who also inspired me in terms of changing and putting ideas into my piece.

When we went to visit the less privileged and visited their school, the children were very shy. We started by playing games with them. Then we blew up balloons and had them try and keep the balloons off of the ground. Then, we sang songs and they tried their best to sing along. It was a bit difficult because of the language barrier, but we made it work in the end. Then we had them draw things on a huge piece of paper, and stuck it up on their classroom wall. It was quite an experience.

Staying with the families was definitely something to remember. They treated us really well, took care of us, and provided us with everything we needed. They showed us places around Jakarta and showed us how much fun it could be to open up to new experiences.

Overall, I really enjoyed my trip and I look forward to going to ISTA again. I cannot wait to learn more, and hopefully I have developed my methods and skill in drama. Thank you ISTA!
