IB Core: Building self-confidence through CAS

Iffat from Sc outlines her CAS experiences this week, including the International Schools Reef Clean and The Annual Bangkok International Choral Festival

Reef Clean

So far in the first half-term of school I have taken part in 3 CAS experiences, all of which I have enjoyed. Firstly, I took part in the International Schools Annual Reef Clean 2018 - my first time taking part in something really engaged with a global issue, pollution. I got to go to Koh Sok, with other like-minded students. Our goal was to make as much an impact as we could to better the environment, not only by getting rid of the pollution and raising awareness as a whole, but also self awareness. I personally have learnt a valuable lesson.

A major experience I took part in, which I really enjoyed, was the 24th Annual Bangkok International Choral Festival, that took place at ISB over the course of 2 days. It was a very enlightening 2 days, not something I typically would do or would be comfortable with, but it was worth it - the nervousness and fear of performing for something so big. It sounds over exaggerated, but honestly, by the end of it, all my emotions fused into a proud, lively and appreciative feeling.

In addition to this, I got the chance to work with Judith Herrington, a choral director and composer. We got to perform one of the songs she composed. The whole experience with her was very interactive and connecting - being able to perform a piece she composed to her, how she envisioned it - it's a proud feeling. We also got to work with Henry Leck, who is also a director.

I wouldn’t describe myself as someone who is confident enough to perform on stage, but this experience helped a lot with my self confidence and willingness to step outside my comfort zone. As a result, I am now part of my own band and we have an upcoming performance - something I would never usually agree to.

Lastly, an ongoing experience is the Senior Choir which, because of my love for singing, I really enjoy and feel again really helps me personally with my confidence levels and it's also just a time to so something for fun within the IB.
