Learning Support Assistant (LSA)

  • Period: Full Time
  • Contract: Contract

Duties & Responsibilities

LSAs are full or part-time members of the Learning Support Department. Their role is to work alongside classroom, subject and Learning Support teachers to ensure that the student’s learning needs are met and they are able to access the curriculum as fully as possible. Even though individual identified students might be the focus of an LSA’s attention, they are in classes to support learning generally as well as specifically.

It is a demanding role that involves:

  • Establishing a caring and nurturing relationship with students.

  • Establishing effective working relationships with class / subject teachers.

  • Developing professional relationships and effective communication with parents.

  • Developing a broad knowledge of different curriculum areas.

  • Being aware of the needs of individual students and anticipating the implications of these needs in a variety of teaching and learning situations.

Qualification

Learning Support Assistants assist teachers to meet students’ needs by:

  • Being punctual to all timetabled lessons and participating fully, at the direction of the class teacher.

  • Adapting tasks and helping to prepare materials and resources.

  • Differentiating language or reinforcing an activity.

  • Clarifying or explaining content and instructions, both written and orally.

  • Assist with reading tasks, so as to improve skills and increase motivation to read.

  • Ensure that students are able to use equipment correctly in a way that supports their learning.

  • Facilitate positive behaviour and interactions between students.

  • Encourage students to develop responsibility for their own learning.

  • Liaise with class teachers and Learning Support teachers in writing and monitoring students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

  • Plan and deliver differentiated curriculum activities based on the student’s IEP.

  • Accompany and assist students and staff on community involvement experiences. School trips, work experience and whole school activities such as cultural celebrations, productions and inter-school events.

  • Participate in other school duties and activities as directed by The Learning Support Coordinator, Head of Phase or Head of School

As well as all above we are looking for Learning Support Assistant 1:1 which is a more demanding and potentially exhausting role:

  1. Enthusiastic and committed to expanding language, physical and emotional needs.
  2. Addressing all theirs needs when working with some SEN kids in 1:1 you might have to be responsible for toileting them or change the nappy
  3. Encouraging and motivating children when supporting their learning and development through the day.
