Primary School Sport: Learning to fly

There is a busy schedule of competition for our Primary School athletes in the next couple of months. Find out more about our ever-growing Saturday Sports Programme at St Andrews International School Bangkok.

Last week we carried out the 1000m challenge for all KS2 children. We feel it is important to start the year by talking to the children about their fitness levels and their understanding of the importance of sport and exercise to their health. We had some great results and look forward to continually educating our children about the importance of exercise. Please speak to your child/children about their score and echo the importance of physical exercise.

We have many more endurance activities for the children this year with the Mini Triathlon for KS1 and the Aquathon for Years 3-6. News of these dates will come soon, but great for our children to experience different sports.

A new development for PE is the new basketball hoops in the blue area for our younger children. The 10ft hoops are very difficult for our Years 2/3/4 children to shoot hoops but now with 4 new hoops at 8.5 ft these children can achieve success and enjoy scoring during lunchtimes, PE lessons and in our ECAs.

Basketball

Our U11 Boys basketballers were in action last week. Our new team started brilliantly with a convincing win over their BISAC opposition and we look forward to the coming season.

It is a busy period for our children with games in BISAC and TISAC. We hope to give as many children as possible a chance to represent our teams in the coming weeks.

Up and Coming Events

We have some big events coming the children’s way kick started by the very busy weekend of the 29/30 September. On 29 September 6 of our Primary teams go to their first big football tournament of the year at Shrewsbury International School.

On 30 September, we have our first Swim Meet with the Tiger Prawns Swim Meet at Patana and also we have the BISAC X country where we hope to enter 24 children. Last year our girls U11 team were champions and our U11 boys came 3rd. The X country is a team event with the times of the quickest top 4 runners put together as a joint time against the other schools.

Before this busy weekend we take all our U9 squads to Harrow to play in friendly games against Harrow and Shrewsbury. Some children will get the chance to play their very first competitive game for STA, very exciting.

Saturday Sport

Our Saturday sports programme started at the weekend. Basketball, football, dance, gymnastics and yoga all at the Primary School make an impressive variety of opportunities for our STA children to come and enjoy sport on a Saturday with their friends. There were over 50 children at basketball and over 70 children for our new football clubs. If you would like your child/children to come and be active on a Saturday morning please contact Mr Damon (damon.se@standrews.ac.th">damon.se@standrews.ac.th).

Swim Rewards Scheme

Another new development within our Sports Department is our new swimming rewards scheme. Children will receive their certificate once they have passed the level they are trying to achieve. This is a great development and rewards and motivates the children the reach that next level.
