Art: Key Stage 3 Book Week Competition

During this year’s book week, the Art department held its second competition asking artists from years 7, 8 and 9 to create a piece of painting on canvas that illustrated a favourite book. The entries were wonderfully creative and our panel of esteemed judges had a really difficult time deciding the top three places. After much deliberation, first prize went to Amee in 8h, for her stunning painting based on the Percy Jackson novels. Second place went to Zi Ying in 9b, for her interpretation of Snow White and Khing in 9f was awarded third place for her creative ‘Alice in Wonderland’ painting. Here are the entries for this year’s Book Week Art competition. Other St Andrews International School entries included here are from Akanksha, Bryan, Bugatt, Jiya, Karin, Maki, Marissa, Pearie, Poon, Radhika, Ririka, So Yoon, Ton and Ursha.

Artist of the Week

Y13 Romy has been exploring the concept of invention and how inventions are represented in visual arts. This mixed media piece represents the invention of the electric light and was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci's sketches of a helicopter, Dali's painting 'Inventions of the Monsters' and cave paintings. The glowing light illuminating the cave painting shows the silhouette of a hunter riding towards the prey against a textured rocky surface. Romy used spray and acrylic painting to create this vibrant composition in which the contrast between dark and light adds to the mood of the piece.
