Primary School Sport: Sea of yellow and blue

Our teams have all been in training now for a few weeks, working hard and getting to know new teammates and new routines. Now we come to a busy period of preparation leading up some big tournaments that kick off the year in sport.

One of the many highlights of any PE teacher is seeing children represent their school with enjoyment and love for sport. Last week and over the weekend we had over 120 children represent St Andrews International School Bangkok with a large percent representing STA for the first time. I hope they enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to their next challenge. Please read below for more details of recent sports fixtures/tournaments.

To stay on top of all the action, I strongly encourage you to regularly review the Primary School Sports Fixtures Google Calendar, which can also be found along all school calendars at calendar.standrews.ac.th.

We are coming to the last week of children learning their first sport with us during their PE/swim lessons. From the week beginning 30 September they will start to learn a new sport. We have had a lot of positive feedback from parents saying how much their children are enjoying particular sports and wanting to extend that into our after school sports program. Also, coming up is our 1000 meter running challenge for KS2. This challenge gives us an indication of children’s fitness levels and then we monitor this throughout the year. Plus, we are looking at our strongest runners from year 5 and 6 to go and compete in the BISAC Cross Country, in which our U11 girls have won 2 years in a row.

Basketball

Well done to all the children who represented STA at their basketball fixture on Thursday. 40 Children, over half of which were playing their very first basketball game for STA, were outstanding. Out of the 5 games STA won 3 and the other 2 games were very close. We have more fixtures and tournaments to come with TISAC league games, BISAC tournaments, Invitational tournaments and then the NAE Games in December.

Football

What a great morning of football for our Primary footballers. 80 children in a sea of yellow and blue played with great energy and togetherness, making all the coaches very happy with their attitude.

Some children played their very first games for STA which was so awesome to see. All teams produced some great performances with U9 girls, U11 boys and U9 boys all winning their games. It was a really positive start and now we look forward to some friendly games before two more tournaments in Term 1.

Thank you for all the support of the STA parents who really were exceptional cheering our children on in a positive way.

Nord Anglia Games

One of our overseas trips during Term 1 is the NAE Games (Dec 6-9), which is a 2-day tournament combining basketball and tee-ball. This year we travel to Vietnam for 4 days. It is a great, fun tournament for the children and the PE look forward to taking the 20 children from Year 5 & 6 on the trip. Children will be invited on the trip once we have looked at both our basketballers and our tee ballers. If you would like any further details about the trip, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

BISP Soccer 7s

The first overseas trip of the year is at the BISP Soccer 7s (Nov 21-24). This is a 4-day football trip where we stay on Surin Beach at the Novotel Hotel. The tournament is the biggest school football tournament in Asia and is one of our favourite trips. If you would like any further details about the trip, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Swimming

This coming Sunday, 29 September 8 & under squad swimmers will kick start our swimming season at Tiger Prawns Invitation at Patana. Competition warm ups will start at 8 am with the competition itself starting at 9 am. Final information for Tiger Prawns parents will be sent out before this Friday 27 September.

After Tiger Prawns, it looks like it will be a very busy October and November filled with swimming competitions including our away meet at ISB SwimFest and of course our very own STA Swim Champs.

Please stay tuned for more information regarding meet information.

Keep in touch

Please stay up-to-date by joining our STA Flames & Marlins Facebook group for parents and students who are part of our Sport Programme.

Parents may post to this group and it’s been great to see some of your photos of our kids in action!

Sporting Conferences

We appreciate that you are often hearing different acronyms - TISAC, BISAC, FOBISIA - that we are involved in but may not know much about them. We hope that the following overview will therefore be useful.

We are currently members of four conferences or organisations:

TISAC: Thailand International Schools Activities Conference

We have been members for many years. This has 16 schools involved which vary in size from small to very large. Currently, we mostly enter Blaze teams in TISAC. There are leagues and tournaments in several sports from U9-U19 and next year, TISAC will also start its own multi-sport Games for Primary children.

BISAC: Bangkok International Schools Athletic Conference

This is our first year in BISAC. The 12-school membership includes the largest international schools in Bangkok in leagues and tournaments across many sports, from U9-U19, split into four seasons through the year. BISAC schools also run invitational tournaments.

FOBISIA: Federation of British International Schools in Asia

This has three major multi-sport Games per year (Primary, U13 and U15) that take place in Phuket against other schools across Asia. There are also single-sport events in Tennis, Golf, Swimming and more, which take place across Asia and provide some amazing travel opportunities.

NAE: Nord Anglia Education

We are part of the South East Asia division and meet for a U11 multi-sport Games once a year. Our schools take it in turn to host the NAE Games.

In addition, we are part of the wider circuit regionally which means we are invited to a whole range of other events across Thailand.

Currently, we are able to offer STA students opportunities through these conferences in Football, Basketball, Swimming, Tennis, Badminton, Golf, Teeball, Track and Field, Triathlon, Cross Country.

If you have any questions about these conferences, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Damon (damon.se@standrews.ac.th).
