Once we figured out that beanstalk grew from the beans which mum throw out from the window, we decided to carry out a small science experiment. What we saw above the soil was only half the equation. There’s so much hidden magic going on beneath the surface, including how plant roots grow. To foster for children's curious mind, we then used a clear zip-bag, cotton pads and beans to observe the growing process.
Children looked at the picture cards and were introduced to words such as: Giant, giantess, harp, golden egg, sack, coins, Jack, mum, magic beans, beanstalk, cow. Later in the week they were challenged to speak in sentences and relate picture cards to the storyline. Don't wake the Sleeping Giant was another fun group activity that encouraged children to listen and recognise different sounds.
To encourage number recognition children in Nursery went on a bean hunt around the school. We also explored measure in Math and ordered beanstalks by height using pictures and interactive white board.
