Helen’s career in Art and Design started in 1999 when she completed her degree in 3D Design. She set up a studio in her home to continue as a designer maker of decorative ceramic objects. Alongside exhibiting her work at local galleries, Helen successfully managed a designer retail store, before further developing her artistic skills by studying an MA in Ceramics. Her teaching career began in 2006 after successfully completing her MA followed by a PGCE in Secondary Art and Design at UWIC. Her first post was in a large single sex comprehensive school in South Wales, where she successfully developed a new GCSE and A Level course in Ceramics and developed a global school partnership with a school in Ghana. This was part of her action research for the iNET Developing Leaders Diploma. After 6 years, Helen was promoted to Head of Art and ESDGC Coordinator at a mixed comprehensive school in Abertillery. It was here that Helen decided to develop her teaching portfolio further by truly exploring cultural diversity through international teaching. From 2014 - 2018, Helen was Director of Art in a high achieving International school in Bangkok. She has extensive experience in teaching and leading GCSE, IGCSE and A Level, where students have achieved Top in World awards.
Helen was extremely excited to join the teaching team at BISB in 2018. Teaching Art and Design in one of Europe’s most spectacular cities, which is rich in the arts and culture, has been a long term dream.
Helen is a strong advocate for the Arts and believes it is necessary to nurture creativity in every child. Teaching Art is about teaching children how to be curious, to think, to question, to have an opinion and to believe in the impossible. Helen believes that innovation and creativity skills are paramount to being a successful global citizen in the 21st Century. She believes that every child is an artist/creator and every child should be given an the opportunity to learn and master artistic skills through education.
