Message from Secondary

In August 2019, BSN welcomed the first cohort of students to the new Intensive EAL program.

Our Intensive EAL program aims to increase a student’s level of reading comprehension so that they can reach the same level as students who study in the mainstream classes.

A typical week for an Intensive EAL student would include:

Hours Activity
5 Reading Comprehension
2 Phonics
2 Academic writing
2 Grammar
2 Speaking
3 Vocabulary building
3 Maths
3 Physical Education
1 Drama
1 Art
1 Music

At the end of the first term, the core subject teachers held a review meeting to discuss the progress of our students. We are delighted to announce that our first graduates of the program, Y6 Crystal and Y9 Simon , are moving to the mainstream classes in January 2020 because we are now confident, they have the skills to study alongside their mainstream peers. They are to be commended for their diligence, determination and their perseverance; they truly have been an inspiration to their peers! In addition, Y6 Kyri graduated from the EAL support program and is now a full-time mainstream student.

Furthermore, in our recent assembly, we were able to celebrate more achievements from our EAL students. Those who were awarded the most improved lexile score included Y7 Felix, Y6 James, Y8 Kaidi and Y9 Carina.

Those who had completed the 100 words vocabulary tests with perfect scores at the Copper level inlcuded: Y6 Jasper, Y6 Rebecca, Y7 Mingke, Y6 Crystal, Y8 Kaidi and Y9 Simon; and at the Bronze level: Y6 Jasper, Y6 Rebecca, Y8 Kaidi and Y9 Simon. These students have worked hard to improve their English vocabulary and their progress has been remarkable.
